The Radical Age Movement – Rally for Age Justice!

BE PART OF A HISTORIC EVENT IN NYC’S UNION SQUARE PARK ON MAY 15, 2018 AT 4:30 PM FOR THE FIRST EVER RALLY FOR AGE JUSTICE!

WHERE: South side of Union Square Park at 14th Street in Manhattan.

Join us in Confronting Ageism.

Ageism exists because American culture demeans older adults and ignores how we can and will contribute to the country’s future.

We are part of the future, too!

WHAT AGE JUSTICE FIGHTS FOR:

  • Respect for people of all ages.
  • Uniting all races, genders, sexualities, religions and other social factors that have divided us.
    • Some have lived all their lives have lived confronting racism, sexism, homophobia, or other biases so that ageism is now another “ism” to confront; For others ageism is their first exposure to discrimination.
    • Let us fight ageism together!
  • Undoing the shame, hurt, and internalized bias we have about what it means to be older adults.
  • We stand for the dignity and well being of frail and disabled older adults.
  • Provide support with respect and dignity, without diminishing people’s other fully human capacities.
  • Our fair share of government funding.
    • 20% of the population deserves more than 2% of the human services budget.
  • To exemplify the community we seek to build and maintain: one that replaces ageist myths with the solidarity, respect and love of people of all ages, sharing our gifts of collaboration, common purpose, and regard for each other’s well being.

WHAT AGE JUSTICE FIGHTS AGAINST:

  • Workplace discrimination that is turning more older adults into part of the invisible poor.
    • Forced to retire due to “workplace reorganization”… unable to be hired at their former incomes…working at entry-level wages…or trying to live solely on social security… excluded from high-paying technical jobs due to ageist stereotypes.
    • Older people of color live on 70% of what white older New Yorkers do—and white New Yorkers below the top 3% live on less than $32,000 a year.
  • Ageist bias in our culture: advertising, TV shows, birthday cards and phrases like “You look good for your age.”
    • People over 40 become ashamed of their age and approach growing older with fears that to be seen as “old” is to become irrelevant.
  • City and state budgets where funding for older adult services is tiny: In New York City, 20% of the population gets less than 2% of the human services budget.

It is so clear why we need to fight for Age Justice!
